Heron’s Key is affiliated with Emerald Communities, a Redmond, Washington-based, nonprofit organization.
Emerald Communities’ story began in 1979, with the forward-thinking vision of one man, Whitney Corwin. Corwin had become familiar with the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model, and was impressed with everything they had to offer. But the closest CCRCs he found were in Seattle, and all with long waiting lists.
So Corwin conceived and championed the idea of creating a senior living community with independent living and a continuum of on-site care, specifically to serve the Eastside’s older adults. Once he recruited fellow volunteer board members, the group worked tirelessly to find the ideal location and secure financing.
Corwin and the board faced an array of obstacles, but their commitment to creating a CCRC in Redmond never wavered. Many of them put down deposits as future residents and, in fact, when the community opened, several of the founding board members were among the first residents to move in. Five founding board members still call the community known as Emerald Heights home.
Today, our sister community, Emerald Heights, is home to more than 450 residents, and is expanding to meet the wants and needs of older adults for generations to come. It’s the people — residents, board and staff — who have made Emerald Communities what it is today. And with Heron’s Key, we’re thrilled to be a part of the future of senior living in Gig Harbor.
